Sambo Australia Rules for both Sport and Combat Sambo (summary)
In a match you win by:
- Total Victory Throw; or
- Painful Hold (submission)
- When there is a 13 point lead difference during any time in the match; or
- By points at the end of the match.
Match Times are single rounds of 5 min for open, 4 min for Novice/Masters and 3 min for Juniors
Points for Throws
You must be Standing at the commencement of a throw for any throw points to be awarded
Total Victory
For the performance of a throw whereby you achieve a high arc and land the opponent square on their back, you must remain standing and in control at the end of the throw
4 Points
Given for a throw which lands an opponent on their back
2 Points
A throw which lands an opponent on their flank/side
1 Point
A throw which lands an opponent on their front/ face down
Note: If you opponent is on their knees and you cause a throw the points value is halved, i.e. a valid 4 point throw is scored as a 2 point throw
Combat Sambo:
- A knockdown achieves the same points as the equivalent score given for a throw,
- 4 points is also awarded if you cause the opponent to receive a standing 8 count,
- 2 standing 8 counts as total victory.
- In ability to continue via striking tko is also a total victory score
Points are given for Hold Downs but only once during a match:
1. For 20 second Hold Down 4 points
2. For 10 second Hols Down 2 points
Sport Sambo:
Arm and Leg locks permitted
No Chokes permitted
Combat Sambo
Chokes, Arm and Leglocks permitted
Strikes permitted with the Head, Closed Fist, Elbow, Knee and Leg in the standing and grounded positions (except there is no kicking the head or upper body of a grounded opponent from a standing position)
Always Illegal
No dangerous throws (spinal or head landings)
No eye gouging or strikes or open hand strikes
No blows to the back or back of head
No Groin Strikes (Australia Only)
No spine or neck locks
No icepick strikes to the collar bone or head
Additional Novice Rules
No twisting of the knee joint (heel hooks and bent toe holds).
No striking with the elbows or the head and no kneeing the head of a grounded opponent.
